CLAIM TO FAME
The area that would comprise Chorleywood became Crown property during the reign of Elizabeth I – The Turnpike Act of 1663 allowed the growing village an opportunity to take advantage of its strategic position by charging travellers to use the road that ran from Hatfield to Reading.
Chorleywood is perhaps best known in history for providing sanctuary to Quakers – Protestants flocked to the area after locals promised safety. Later, William Penn would found the Pennsylvania Colony in British America with settlers from Chorleywood, nearby Rickmansworth and other nearby towns and villages in Buckinghamshire.
A major historical attraction is Chorleywood House – a Regency-era mansion built in 1822 and owned by John Saunders Gilliat, the Governor of the Bank of England from 1883-1885. Today, the model estate and market gardens is managed by Three Rivers Council and is enjoyed by local people as a nature reserve.
