CLAIM TO FAME
The distinctive name of ‘Rickmansworth’ is believed to come from the Saxon name ‘Ryckmer’, while ‘worth’ means ‘farm’ or ‘stockade’. In the Domesday Book of 1086 – the first-ever survey of England – the area was recorded as ‘Prichemaresworde’, undergoing various slight changes until becoming known as ‘Rykemerysworth’ in 1418.
Today, the population of Rickmansworth has expanded to over 25,000. While its location close to London is partly the reason for the town’s growth, the existence of the three rivers gave rise to several industries which allowed the town to thrive over the centuries.
